![]() I think that anyone in their adolescence can relate to feeling like they're constantly having to kill themselves off and rebuild from scratch, so I wanted to make commentary on that theme as well. Almost like spending time with yourself- so that's how the video was born. I knew I wanted the video to evoke that mood being alone with someone. The cinematic music video features "horror-style setups of shovels and nosebleeds". That kinda company with someone who you're so close to, you don't need to say a single word to fill the 'uncomfortable' silence." In the music video which has nearly 6 million views, Gray is alone in an abandoned house, where he eventually manages to kill and bury a clone of himself. He told Paper, "I just really needed some company, that kinda company that didn't require attention. Gray wrote "Comfort Crowd" whilst experiencing loneliness after moving to Los Angeles for college and leaving his friends behind in Texas. ![]() It's also a chance to encourage others to embrace who they are and be unapologetic about it. I'm not the coolest person, but the album is me accepting the fact I'm weird and I don't need to be anybody else. I talk a lot about my friends and people I've met touring over the past year. The record is a study of how I perceive the world. Gray told Teen Vogue that growing up as a child of mixed race in Texas affected who he is as a person, as he felt that "he didn't really belong anywhere." He told Clash: And so, as a kid, I was just like, there's no way that I'm gonna make it, there's no way that I'm going to survive or there's no way that there's going to be anything more to my life than just dealing with pain. I lived in a really unsafe household, and life just wasn't very good for me. When you're young, it's really hard to imagine life not always being hard. Gray told People that the album was inspired by his "pretty rough" childhood in Texas, explaining Kid Krow received a boost in sales and re-entered the charts of several countries when its track "Heather" became a sleeper hit after gaining popularity on the online platform TikTok. Commercially, it debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and further topped the US Pop Albums Chart also debuting at number two on the Top Album Sales chart. Kid Krow received positive reviews from music critics for its production, songwriting and Gray's vocal performance. The album was supported by the singles " Checkmate", "Comfort Crowd", " Maniac", " The Story", " Wish You Were Sober", and " Heather." The album is a " coming of age" record inspired by elements such as his rough childhood experiences of poverty, abuse, and discrimination. It was released on March 20, 2020, through Republic Records. ![]() In the chorus, he lyrically dives head-first into the metaphor: “‘Cause I’ve gotten tired of the games that you play/ When you tell me you love me then you throw me away/ So cry me a river ’til you drown in a lake/ ‘Cause you may think you’re winning but checkmate.Kid Krow is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Conan Gray. He mentions other dating clichés, like thinking you’re exclusive and then watching your partner flirt with others. “You think you’re funny, right?/ Calling me drunk when it’s too late at night/ Telling me truths that you know are all lies,” Gray sings. If you wanna cheat on me with my best friend, I’m gonna trick you into thinking I don’t know, then kidnap you both and send you to starve on a deserted island so you can spend the rest of you short lives alone together (just like you wanted). ![]() “If you wanna treat love like a game, I’m gonna win it. “In the ‘Checkmate’ music video, I finally get revenge for all the times I got played with in a relationship,” Gray said in a press release. ![]() Love’s a game, as Conan Gray perfectly puts into words with his song “Checkmate,” the video for which is out today (July 25). ![]()
